Muscle Abs - Workouts To Develop And Tighten Muscles

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Attempting to gain shapely and toned muscle abs is a process in which you must exercise, but also correct your diet. If you’re wondering why the exercises you’re doing haven’t gotten rid of the layer of fat that lies across the muscles, it’s because you’re not losing weight, only building up the muscles below. This is good news and bad news. The good news is that you’ll only have to change your diet and the rest of the work is done, it’s just simply toning up occasionally. The bad news is that for some, changing their diet is a very difficult task. Here are some exercises to help build up and tone.

The Bicycle Crunch

Ideally, you should have an exercise mat or some soft layer beneath you to prevent injury while performing this exercise. Start by lying flat on the floor with your lower back pressed against the ground. Place both your hands on the back of your head, in the typical relaxing style. Now bring your knees up to around a forty-five degree angle, then pretend to pedal, as though you were on a bike. To make this more effective, touch your elbow to the opposing knee, ie, left elbow to right knee. Be sure to breathe evenly throughout.

Abdominal Crunch

If you have an exercise ball, this is a brilliant exercise. If not, continue on for an exercise that doesn’t require a ball. Begin by sitting down onto the exercise ball and place your feet flat on the ground. Roll the ball up your back until you’re parallel with the ground. Tense your abs and bring yourself up to around forty-five degrees. Then lower yourself down until you’re flat again. To make the position less stable, consider reducing the distance between your feet to build up your oblique muscles.

The Vertical Leg Crunch

For those without an exercise ball, this is a good replacement. Again, you’ll likely need a soft surface beneath you, such as an exercise mat. Lie on your back and put your hands on the back of your head. Now lift your legs up, keeping your knees slightly bent throughout. From here, you will contract your abs and pull yourself up until your shoulder blades leave the ground. Try not to pull on your neck by keeping your chin up. Pull your upper body towards your knees, then return.

Dieting

Bad habits are usually the sources of weight gain. Fat can be difficult to burn off with just exercise if your diet isn’t taking part as well. Try to reduce fatty and sugary foods and lower the number of snacks you’re having a day. Foods with saturated fats should be avoided as this is tougher to burn off than unsaturated fats. Fibrous foods are a must, as is protein if you wish to build up the muscle and not just tone it.
